Birbo, meaning 'rascal' in Veneto dialect, is a skin-contact white wine from Marco Buratti's Azienda Agricola Farnea, located in Villa di Teolo within the Colli Euganei National Park. The 2020 blend is Tocai, Malvasia, Marzemina, and Pinella from old vines farmed biodynamically on the volcanic soils of the Euganean Hills. Grapes were picked a touch earlier than usual to retain a very low ABV.
The wine spends ten days on skins before fermentation and aging in concrete vats. Nothing is added at any stage: no sulfites, no fining agents, no filtration. The result is a cloudy, amber-gold wine that carries a gentle natural spritz from the fermentation vessel.
In the glass it is fruit-forward and fragrant with plenty of citrus zest and a light grip from the skin contact. At 11% alcohol, it has a tonic-like freshness that makes it an easy all-day pour, from aperitivo to the table. Veneto IGT.
