Baby Jane is a bourbon from Widow Jane, the distillery in Red Hook, Brooklyn. It is a blend of straight bourbons made in Brooklyn and in Kentucky. What sets it apart is the corn. Widow Jane grows its own heirloom strain, also called Baby Jane. The team crossed Bloody Butcher Red with Wapsie Valley Yellow corn. They then replanted and picked the best kernels for four years. Craft Spirits Magazine calls it the first nationally available bourbon made with a proprietary heirloom corn. It makes a friendly first step into the wider Widow Jane bourbon lineup.
In Brooklyn, the spirit runs through a 1,000-liter pot and column hybrid still in a single pass. The Kentucky portion copies that process. The whiskey then ages four to six years in new, charred American oak barrels. It is not chill filtered. Widow Jane proofs it with limestone mineral water from the Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale, New York. That mine sits about 100 miles north of the distillery. The brand says the water shapes the mouthfeel and finish. Rye in the mash adds a gentle spice, though the full mash bill is not published. The bottle comes in at 91 proof, or 45.5% ABV.
The official tasting notes are playful. On the nose you get honeycomb, cream soda, green grape and a hint of salty air. The palate brings café au lait, salted caramel and fresh fig. Strawberries and cream taffy, allspice and raspberry leaf sit in the background. The finish is long, with peach compote, star anise, horchata and milk chocolate. Reviewers also pick out honey, caramel, apricot and peach, so the sweet fruit comes through clearly.
Critics have been kind to it. Whisky Advocate scored it 87 points and called it sweet and herbaceous. Breaking Bourbon found it light and easy to sip. That makes it a good choice when you want flavor without heavy oak. If you usually drink big barrel proof bourbon, you will find it gentle.
Pour it neat first, so you can catch the delicate fruit. A little water brings the honey forward. Over a large cube it stays soft and sweet. It also mixes well. Try it in an Old Fashioned, a Manhattan or a whiskey sour. The honey and fig notes play nicely with a dash of bitters.
Food is easy too. Smoked brisket, BBQ ribs and bacon-wrapped shrimp match its caramel side. Sharp cheddar or creamy brie works with the fruit. For dessert, try pecan pie, dark chocolate or a caramel treat. Widow Jane released Baby Jane across the country in June 2024. The first allocation was 15,000 cases. If you have tried the classic Widow Jane bottles, this one shows a softer side. If you are new to the brand, it is a friendly place to begin. Keep a bottle on hand for guests who say they do not usually drink bourbon. The sweet fruit and honey often change their mind.
