Thirteenth Colony threw out the conventional playbook. Blending straight bourbon and straight rye isn't exactly groundbreaking, but nailing the precise intersection of their distinct personalities remains incredibly elusive. Barrel Symphony Composition No. 1 fuses 87% six-year-old bourbon with a crucial 13% spike of seven-year-old rye. It demands your immediate attention. Bottled at a formidable 116.2 proof, this unabashed liquid surges with profound maple sweetness and a jagged, spice-driven edge that only well-aged rye provides. The distillers bypassed mere mixing to orchestrate a downright symphonic collision of heavy grains and seasoned wood.
This debut release redefines what a cask-strength hybrid should accomplish. Instead of letting the rye overpower the softer corn elements, the composition builds immense tension. You get the familiar, deeply roasted warmth of an expertly matured Georgia bourbon colliding head-on with an earthy, botanical rye kick. It drinks magnificently served neat. Those who prefer a few drops of water will find the high-proof threshold remarkably forgiving, unlocking a trove of dark chocolate and nuanced herbal intricacies.
