Rum Agricole 970 Reserva 6 Years (often simply called Rum 970) is a quintessential example of Madeiran rum excellence. Produced by Engenhos do Norte (North Mills) in Porto da Cruz, Madeira, it is crafted using the traditional agricole method from 100% fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses. This distillery, operating since 1927, is one of the last in Europe to use steam-powered machinery. The "970" label pays homage to the year the brand was first registered (1970). This specific expression is matured for at least six years in French oak barrels within the island’s unique subtropical climate, which accelerates the interaction between the spirit and the wood.
Spirit Description
The rum presents a bright amber to dark copper color with an oily, rich texture. On the nose, it is highly aromatic and "vinous," reflecting the island's wine-making heritage. It leads with scents of candied fruit, vanilla, and blond tobacco, underpinned by the grassy, vegetal freshness typical of agricole rum. The palate is velvety and well-balanced, featuring a "symphony" of flavors including apricot, peach jam, and dried figs, followed by deeper notes of toasted cereals, bitter cocoa, and a hint of gunflint. The finish is long, dry, and elegant, characterized by soft woody tannins, sweet pepper, and a lingering herbal note unique to Madeira. It is typically bottled at 40% ABV.
