The Rocky Patel The Edge 20th Anniversary Robusto celebrates the cigar that helped transform Rocky Patel from an ambitious boutique producer into one of the industry's most recognizable names. Patel began developing The Edge concept in 2002, eventually releasing the cigar in 2004 with an approach that seemed almost contrary to premium-cigar convention: bold tobacco, minimal presentation and enormous 100-count crates of initially unbanded cigars. The gamble worked. The Edge became one of Rocky Patel's defining brands, and for its twentieth anniversary Patel returned to the tobacco that figured prominently in the original concept—Sumatra.
The 5½" x 50 Robusto wears an especially noteworthy Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper aged for more than ten years. Underneath is a hearty blend of Central American tobaccos that preserves the muscular character associated with The Edge. In the compact 50-ring format, that mature Sumatra wrapper remains firmly in command, bringing aromatic wood, pepper and spice against deeper impressions of earth, cocoa and coffee. There's natural sweetness underneath the darker tobacco, giving the cigar considerably more refinement than the deliberately rugged original Edge presentation might lead you to expect.
The Robusto may be the most concentrated of the three Anniversary sizes. Its traditional proportions put plenty of that decade-aged wrapper against the interior blend, while the shorter length brings the different components together quickly. This is still recognizably The Edge—substantial, flavorful and unapologetically tobacco-driven—but twenty years of Rocky Patel's experience have polished the edges. For the smoker who remembers the original crates, it's an interesting look at how far the brand has traveled; for someone discovering The Edge today, it's an excellent place to start.
