Pilsner Urquell is the world’s first golden lager and arguably the most influential beer in history. First brewed in 1842 in the city of Plzeň (Pilsen), Czech Republic, it is the original "Pilsner"—in fact, Urquell literally translates to "Original Source." Before its creation, most beers were dark and cloudy; Urquell introduced the world to clarity and golden brilliance. To this day, it remains the gold standard for the Bohemian (Czech) Pilsner style, still brewed using traditional methods and local ingredients that define the category.
Beer Description
Pilsner Urquell pours a deep, saturated gold (often described as "old gold") with a dense, wet, creamy white head that exhibits incredible persistence and leaves a thick "Brussels lace" on the glass.
Aroma: The nose is an iconic balance of sweet and spicy. It leads with a rich scent of toasted bread and honeyed malt, immediately followed by the aggressive, floral, and peppery aroma of Saaz hops. There is a very subtle hint of diacetyl (a buttery note), which is a traditional and intentional characteristic of Czech lagers.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-bodied with a soft, round mouthfeel. It leads with a complex malty sweetness and notes of caramel, which is quickly cut by a sharp, assertive bitterness. The finish is long and refreshing, with the spicy hop character lingering alongside a clean, mineral dryness.
Profile: It sits at an ABV of 4.4% and a firm bitterness of 40 IBU, making it significantly more bitter and flavorful than most "international" pilsners.
Technical Notes: The beer’s unique character is a result of three specific factors:
Triple Decoction: A labor-intensive mashing process where portions of the mash are boiled and returned to the main tun, caramelizing the sugars and creating that deep golden color.
Soft Plzeň Water: The local water is extremely soft, which allows the high hop bitterness to feel smooth and rounded rather than harsh or metallic.
Saaz Hops: It is brewed exclusively with Saaz hops grown in nearby Žatec, providing the signature earthy, spicy complexity.
