Oban 14 Year is one of Scotland’s most iconic single malts. As the name suggests, it hails from the coastal town of Oban in the western Highlands. The 14‑year expression is the flagship bottling, matured in oak casks that allow the spirit to develop a balance of fruit, smoke, and brine. About the latter, the coastal climate plays a crucial role - so it bears mentioning. The distillery’s wooden worm tubs, perched up on the rooftops, catch that salty sea breeze while the spirit condenses.
On the nose, you get citrus zest, ripe stone fruit, and a touch of sea salt. You also get a subtle smoke as well as notes of honey and heather. On the palate, the flavors are rich and balanced. Orange peel, dried fig, and sweet malt are layered with maritime brine and a gentle smokiness. The mouthfeel is medium‑bodied, silky, and warming, with a finish that lingers on salted caramel, smoke, and a faint herbal bitterness.
Over the years, this bottle has collected a string of top honors at major international spirits competitions, including Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
This bottle is for whisky lovers. Full stop. It's also a great bottle for the contemplative sipper, perfect for settling down an evening with.
