Nikka Coffey Grain originates from Japan and is primarily produced at the Miyagikyo Distillery in Sendai. The Nikka Whisky Distilling Company was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who is widely regarded as the 'father of Japanese whisky' after studying the craft in Scotland. Today, the brand is owned by Asahi Group Holdings and remains a cornerstone of the Japanese spirits industry.
Spirit Description
This whisky is distilled predominantly from corn using traditional Coffey stills, which were imported from Scotland in the 1960s to produce a rounder, more flavourful grain spirit. It features a bright golden hue and a medium body with a notably smooth, creamy texture. The aroma is fresh and enticing, offering notes of vanilla, coconut, and exotic fruits like mango and papaya, alongside a hint of citrus. On the palate, it is juicy and sweet, delivering flavours of caramel, toffee, and popcorn, balanced by subtle spices like cinnamon and clove. The finish is long and pleasant, characterized by lingering notes of pear, oak, and a touch of marmalade. It is bottled at 45% ABV.
Accolades
Nikka Coffey Grain has received widespread international acclaim for redefining the grain whisky category. It was named 'Japanese Grain Whiskey of the Year' at the 2020 World Whiskies Awards and consistently earns high ratings, including a 94.5% score in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible. It also secured a Gold Medal at the International Spirits Challenge in 2020.
Food Pairing
The sweet and fruity profile of this whisky makes it an excellent companion for a variety of cuisines. It pairs beautifully with Japanese dishes such as fresh sashimi or scallop tempura, where its creamy texture complements the seafood. For a savoury match, it stands up well to glazed pork belly or roast chicken with honey and sesame. It is also a superb choice for dessert, particularly when served alongside vanilla bean panna cotta, apple tart, or a light Japanese style cheesecake.
