Lucky Seven The Hold Up is a Kentucky straight bourbon with a Hollywood streak. The name nods to "Lucky Stage 7," a famous Hollywood soundstage. The whiskey is sourced from Kentucky and aged in new charred American oak. It is bottled at 100 proof, with nothing added but water.
The age changes from batch to batch, so check your label. Batch 01 was a 12-year-old bourbon. A later run was bottled at 14 years. Recent batches, such as Batch 08, carry a 9-year age statement. The blenders taste the barrels and match them to a steady house style.
Caramel and vanilla lead the nose, with light fruit and a touch of cinnamon. On the palate you get caramel, brown sugar and more vanilla. Dark fruit and toasted oak add depth. The finish runs medium to long, with baking spice, oak and caramel.
Critics like it too. Whiskey Advocate gave the 9-year release 92 points.
Sip it neat to follow how it changes in the glass. A few drops of water will open the aroma. It also makes a bold Old Fashioned. Pair it with grilled meats, smoky barbecue or a slice of pecan pie. Dark chocolate is a great match as well. Save this one for slow evenings and good company.
