Lucky Seven The Frenchman is a Kentucky straight bourbon with a French twist. After its standard aging in new charred American oak, the whiskey goes into new French oak barrels for a finishing rest. Master Blender Ashley Barnes put the blend together, and the distillery source is not disclosed.
French oak brings a finer grain and a softer kind of spice than American wood. You feel that in the glass. The standard release is bottled at 113 proof, so there is plenty of power here, yet it stays rounded.
Your first sniff brings freshly ground cinnamon and warm cedar. On the palate it turns silky and coats your mouth with smoked maple syrup. Toasted pecans, caramel and baking spice follow close behind.
The finish is long and keeps changing. Gingerbread and pipe tobacco hang around for a while. Then a light, fresh hint of spearmint lifts everything at the end.
Start with a neat pour, then let a few drops of water loosen it up. The brand suggests pairing it with a cigar, and smoked meats or pecan pie work well too. If you enjoy bold, high-proof bourbon with a polished edge, this bottle is a fun one to explore.
