J Vineyards & Winery is based in Healdsburg, in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley. Cool fog rolls in from the Pacific here most mornings. That slow, cool ripening is why the valley makes such graceful Pinot Noir. The 2022 bottling blends more than 50 small lots from the winery's vineyards.
Swirl the glass and you smell vivid raspberry and cherry. Savory mulling spice and a hint of rooibos tea follow. The palate feels bright and fresh. Ripe berries and cherry lead, with touches of cola and rose petal. Earth and clove add depth. The finish carries soft cinnamon, a forest-floor note and a light touch of oak.
Critics agree. Wine Spectator scored the 2022 vintage 92 points. Notes and scores shift a little from year to year, so check the vintage on your bottle.
This wine loves the dinner table. The winery also suggests truffled goat cheese, or chocolate torte with raspberry sauce. You will enjoy it most if you like Pinot that is fresh and layered rather than heavy.
