This structured and 'crystalline' red wine originates from Australia, within the cool-climate Coal River Valley region of southern Tasmania. Crafted by Giant Steps a benchmark producer led by Head Winemaker Melanie Chester. This bottling demonstrates the estate's single-vineyard dedication to capturing Australia's finest Pinot Noir sites. Sourced from the esteemed Nocton Vineyard (planted in 1999 on northeast-facing slopes), the vines are rooted in ancient, triassic sandstone and calcareous clay soils. Although southern Tasmania features a cool maritime atmosphere, the Coal River Valley receives intense, long sunlight hours during the growing season. This unique microclimate allows Pinot Noir grapes to build exceptional dark-berry density and complex structural tannins while preserving an electric, razor-sharp natural acidity.
Wine Description
Giant Steps Coal River Pinot Noir presents a deep, luminous crimson-ruby color in the glass with bright purple glints along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally fresh, high-toned, and complex, delivering an intense, exotic, and precisely focused expression of Tasmanian terroir. The bouquet opens with an inviting display of wild dark cherries, black raspberries, and ripe boysenberry, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of crushed violets, dried herbs, woodsmoke, chinotto, damp forest floor, and a subtle touch of exotic five-spice and cedarwood. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, muscular, and precisely focused, showcasing a succulent, power-packed core of dark stone fruits, blood orange zest, and pomegranate molasses. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that effortlessly elevates its mid-palate fruit density. The mouthfeel is linear, athletic, and supple, framed by fine-grained, chalky tannins that glide into an extraordinarily long, dry, and savory finish accented by persistent notes of graphite, iron, and subtle spice.
