#25 Wine Spectator Top 100 2025
Carpineto Chianti Classico Riserva originates from Italy, specifically from the Tuscany region and the Chianti Classico subregion. Co-founded in 1967 by Giovanni Carlo Sacchet and Antonio Mario Zaccheo, the winery was established with a mission to produce world-class red wines that could restore the region's historical prestige. The estate follows a winemaking philosophy that marries modern viticulture with deep respect for Tuscan values, maintaining carbon-neutral estates and focusing on high-quality, sustainably farmed fruit.
Wine Description
This wine presents an intense ruby red colour with garnet reflections that develop further as it ages. The sensory profile is elegant and 'beefy', featuring a complex nose of black cherry, blackberry, and raspberry, interwoven with notes of vanilla, wild herbs, iron, and earth. On the full-bodied and warm palate, it delivers a dense texture with concentrated flavours of dark fruits and muscular tannins. The finish is remarkably long, spicy, and persistent.
Varietal Composition: A traditional blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Canaiolo.
Stylistic Notes: The wine is celebrated for its classic elegance and tightly woven balance between fruit, tannins, and acidity, showing excellent aging potential through 2043.
ABV: Recorded at 13.5%.
Organic Status: While not specifically certified organic, the wine is produced from sustainably farmed, carbon-neutral estates following eco-friendly production codes.
Food Pairing
The robust structure and savory depth of this Riserva make it a versatile partner for rich and flavourful dishes. Suggested pairings include grilled red meats, Bistecca alla Fiorentina (Florentine-style steak), roast lamb with rosemary, and wild boar stews. It also complements traditional Italian preparations like lasagna, hearty pasta with meat sauce, and aged cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano.
