Caol Ila — pronounced "cull-EE-la," Gaelic for "Sound of Islay" — 12 Year Old is one of Islay's most important and underappreciated single malts, and a whisky that has quietly earned a devoted following among those who know it. Located on the northeastern shore of Islay overlooking the narrow strait that separates the island from the Kintyre peninsula, Caol Ila is one of Diageo's largest distilleries and the backbone of many famous blends — yet as a single malt it reveals a character that is distinctly its own: peated, coastal, and surprisingly elegant.
Matured for 12 years in ex-bourbon casks, Caol Ila 12 strikes a beautiful balance between Islay's signature peat smoke and a fresh, almost delicate fruitiness that sets it apart from its more assertive island neighbors. The nose is clean and inviting — lemon zest, green apple, and a gentle floral sweetness are threaded with wisps of medicinal peat smoke and sea spray, creating an aromatic profile that is both complex and remarkably approachable. On the palate, it's medium-bodied and beautifully balanced: citrus fruit, vanilla, and soft malt are met by a clean, dry peat smoke and a briny coastal character that builds steadily toward a long, warming finish. The finish is dry, smoky, and satisfying — sea salt, lemon, and a lingering peaty warmth that fades slowly and cleanly.
The insider's Islay malt — Caol Ila 12 rewards those who seek it out with a complexity and elegance that few peated whiskies can match at this price.
