Bowmore 12 Year Old is the definitive introduction to one of Islay's oldest and most storied distilleries, established in 1779 on the shores of Loch Indaal in the village of Bowmore. As the island's oldest distillery, Bowmore occupies a unique position in the world of Scotch — producing a style of peated single malt that sits beautifully between the fierce, medicinal smoke of the southern Islay distilleries and the gentler, more floral character of the north, earning it the well-deserved reputation as the "heart of Islay."
Matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks in Bowmore's legendary No. 1 Vaults — the oldest maturation warehouse in Scotland, partially below sea level — the 12 Year Old develops a character that is unmistakably Bowmore: smoke and sweetness in perfect harmony. The nose is elegant and complex — gentle peat smoke and sea salt drift alongside dark chocolate, dried fruit, and a distinctive floral note of dark rose that is Bowmore's signature. On the palate, it's beautifully balanced: waves of smoke, dark berry fruit, toffee, and a warming spice build with a richness and depth that belies its age. The finish is long, smoky, and satisfying — sea salt, dark fruit, and a gentle peaty warmth fading slowly and gracefully.
A landmark whisky and an essential bottle for any Scotch collection — Bowmore 12 is Islay at its most balanced and beguiling.
