The New England Pale Ale (NEPA) from Blindman Brewing is the "juice-forward" counterpart to their more traditional hop offerings. While many breweries aim for maximum intensity, Blindman’s approach is one of balance and "drinkability." It is designed to deliver the lush, tropical aromatics and signature soft mouthfeel of the New England style, but at a slightly lower alcohol percentage and bitterness than a full-blown NEIPA. It’s a beer built for the "haze-heads" who want flavor without the heavy fatigue of a stronger ale.
Beer Description
This NEPA pours a dense, opaque glowing straw-yellow, looking very much like a glass of fresh pineapple juice, with a thick, billowy white head.
Aroma: The nose is an immediate tropical escape. Expect a concentrated bouquet of ripe mango, passionfruit, and sweet clementine, underscored by a very faint, pleasant "dank" herbal note that keeps the fruit from feeling one-dimensional.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-bodied with a remarkably soft, "pillowy" mouthfeel. It leads with a velvety texture and flavors of citrus pulp and stone fruit. True to the New England style, the bitterness is very low and rounded, allowing the "juicy" hop character to dominate from the first sip to the finish.
Profile: It has a highly sessionable ABV of 5.5% and low perceived bitterness, making it a "crushable" alternative to its heavier IPA cousins.
Technical Notes: Blindman utilizes a heavy hand of Citra and Mosaic hops (often alongside rotating varieties) primarily in the whirlpool and dry-hop stages to maximize oil extraction while minimizing bitterness. The grain bill features a significant amount of flaked oats and wheat, which provides the protein-rich structure for the permanent haze and the signature silky texture.
