Astraeus Single Malt Gin is a distinctive spirit crafted in Atlanta, Georgia, by master distillers Danielle Leavell and Matt Greif at the Distillery of Modern Art. What sets it apart is its base of 100% malted barley, traditionally used for whiskey, but here reimagined for gin. Unlike most malted barley gins that are distilled to 190 proof to achieve neutrality, Astraeus is rectified to 160 proof, preserving the rich, whiskey-like character while still embracing the bold botanicals typical of gin. This innovative approach creates a rare crossover between two beloved spirits.
The gin presents a flavor profile as unique as its distillation process, featuring notes of arid earth, fresh rain, and savory florals. Botanicals like sagebrush and heather enhance the gin's natural depth, creating an earthy, floral balance that lingers on the palate. With an ABV of 57.7%, Astraeus is potent, yet its complexity is smooth and inviting, offering an experience that bridges whiskey's warmth with gin's botanical freshness.
Astraeus Single Malt Gin is best enjoyed in small sips to appreciate its full range of flavors, though it can be a standout base for gin-forward cocktails as well. Whether neat, on the rocks, or in a classic martini, this gin brings a whiskey-like weight and depth to every sip, making it a rare and versatile addition to any spirits collection.
