Privada Storytelling
History has a way of circling back when passion meets heritage. Clark Thornton, a name familiar to many in the Privada family, discovered that his great-grandfather once ran a cigar company and shop in Erie, Pennsylvania called A.A. Brugger. From the early 1900s into the 1960s, A.A. Brugger was a staple of Erie’s cigar culture, celebrated for its dark, Pennsylvania-grown wrapper—the same broadleaf that would later rise to fame across the industry.
Privada has recreated this lost legacy, resurrecting A.A. Brugger in a modern form while remaining true to its Pennsylvania roots. Where once Cuban filler was used, this remake now relies on Nicaraguan tobaccos, marrying American tradition with Nicaraguan boldness. The result is not just a cigar—it’s a living link to a family story and a tribute to American cigar history.
Flavor Journey
-
First Third: Chocolate syrup and creamy smoke hit the palate, layered with faint dried Italian herbs, oak, and white pepper. Retrohale delivers sharp white pepper, cream, and wood, while tropical fruit notes like banana and mango flash across the background.
-
Second Third: The pepper evolves from white to black as cocoa deepens. Fruit becomes more pronounced, evoking chocolate-covered cherries. Cherry wood, cream, and minerals tingle the tongue, joined by fleeting tropical sweetness and rich tobacco undertones.
-
Final Third: A crescendo of tropical fruit and creamy milk chocolate leads the way. Pineapple-like zest and mineral brightness pop against the backdrop of white and black pepper. Notes of firewood and oak ground the experience, closing with a bold and memorable finish.
Why It Belongs in Privada
The A.A. Brugger remake is more than a cigar—it’s a resurrection. By reviving Clark Thornton’s family heritage, Privada bridges cigar history with modern craftsmanship. This cigar embodies what the Privada movement is all about: uncovering lost treasures, honoring tradition, and reimagining them for today’s discerning smoker.
