Wild Turkey 101 is the bold, high-proof bourbon that built the Wild Turkey name. Its roots reach back to the years after the Civil War. That is when the Ripy brothers opened a distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. It ran for close to fifty years until Prohibition. After repeal, the old distillery came back to life.
The name came from a hunting trip. Distillery executive Thomas McCarthy brought some maturing whiskey on a wild turkey hunt with friends. The next year, his friends asked for more of that “wild turkey whiskey” again. The name stuck, and the 101 label arrived in 1942.
Master Distiller Jimmy Russell has guided this bourbon for more than six decades. The mash bill is about 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley. That rye share is high for a bourbon, and you can taste the extra spice. The spirit ages six to eight years in new American white oak. Each barrel gets the deep No. 4 “alligator” char. You won't find an age statement on the label.
Bottled at 101 proof, this Kentucky whiskey is full of flavor. Vanilla leads the nose, with cinnamon and oak close behind. On the palate you get a touch of upfront sweetness from vanilla and caramel. Oak and baking spice fill the middle. The finish brings bold spice and a bright twist of orange peel. Some tasters also note a peppery edge.
In 2021 it won Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The same year it earned 90 points and Gold from the Beverage Testing Institute. You can sip it neat or over a large cube. It also shines in an Old Fashioned, Manhattan or Whiskey Sour. The proof keeps it from fading under ice or vermouth. Pair it with smoked brisket, BBQ ribs, aged cheddar or bread pudding.
