The Saar Valley is not for the faint of heart. It is cold, the slopes are punishingly steep, and the slate soil offers zero comfort to the vines. Yet, it is here that Weinmanufaktur Petershof chases perfection with their "Vineyard Project" series. Project 005 isn’t just a Riesling; it is a geological survey in liquid form.
Bottled as Feinherb, this wine occupies that thrilling middle ground where sugar and acid wrestle for dominance, neither one winning, both keeping the other in check. The winemaking is minimalist, allowing the slate to do the heavy lifting. This is a wine of tension. It feels energetic and jittery in the glass, humming with the cool-climate electricity that makes the Saar the most distinct white wine region on the planet. You don’t drink this while distracted. It requires you to stop, taste, and pay attention to the soil.
