Most bourbon relies on rye for a spicy kick, but W. L. Weller flips the script. This highly sought-after "orange label" expression swaps rye for wheat, resulting in a spirit that glides across the palate with a softness that feels almost illicit. While the standard Weller line aims for consistency through blending, the Single Barrel release embraces the beautiful unpredictability of maturation.
Each bottle captures a unique snapshot of the Buffalo Trace rickhouses. One barrel might lean heavily into deep, caramelized sugars, while its neighbor yields a drier, oak-forward profile. You aren't just buying a brand name here; you are securing a specific, unrepeatable moment in the distillery’s history.
At 97 proof, the liquid maintains a robust character without the aggressive heat of a barrel-strength pouring. It balances distinct sweetness with a complex, woody backbone that keeps the experience grounded. This is wheated bourbon in its most singular, honest form.
