Village Wit is the flagship white wheat ale from Calgary’s Village Brewery. While the "Wit" style (meaning "white") originated in Belgium, Village has put a distinctly local spin on it, creating one of Alberta's most popular patio beers. It is designed to be a "social" beer—unfiltered, cloudy, and incredibly easy to drink. For the 18.5 Litre Keg (commonly known as a Corny or "Sixth Barrel" keg), it is the gold standard for home bars or small gatherings, offering approximately 37–40 pints of fresh-from-the-tap citrus refreshment.
Beer Description
Village Wit pours a hazy, pale straw color with a dense, creamy white head. Because it is unfiltered, it maintains a beautiful "luminous" glow in the glass.
Aroma: The nose is bright, zesty, and inviting. It leads with a dominant scent of sweet orange peel and fresh lemon, followed by the classic Witbier "spice" of crushed coriander. There is a soft, bready aroma from the wheat that provides a comforting, "bakery-fresh" foundation.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-bodied with a silky, "fluffy" mouthfeel that is characteristic of high wheat content. It leads with a refreshing burst of tangerine and citrus zest, followed by a gentle, peppery spiciness. The bitterness is kept very low, allowing the crisp, "tangy" finish of the yeast and citrus to provide the refreshment.
Profile: It sits at a sessionable 4.5% ABV and a very low bitterness of 12 IBU, making it accessible to almost every palate.
Technical Notes: This beer is brewed with a significant portion of unmalted wheat, which provides the signature proteins for its hazy appearance and smooth texture. Village adds bitter orange peel and coriander during the boil to achieve its aromatic complexity. It is fermented with a specific Belgian-style ale yeast that contributes subtle notes of clove and fruit without becoming overpowering.
