The Toscano Extra Vecchio is one of the great benchmarks of traditional Italian cigar making—a serious, unapologetic expression of fire-cured Kentucky tobacco that has been part of the Toscano portfolio since 1953. Today it is produced exclusively at Toscano's historic Lucca factory in Tuscany, where its unmistakable double-truncated-cone shape and rugged appearance remain faithful to a cigar-making tradition stretching back more than two centuries. Extra Vecchio is particularly significant because its dark Italian Kentucky wrapper comes from Tuscany's Valtiberina, while the filler draws heavily on Tuscan Kentucky complemented by powerful leaf from Pontecorvo in Lazio and a portion of North American Kentucky. This is a cigar defined by provenance rather than polish, and every element of the blend is designed to showcase the muscular personality of fire-cured leaf.
What separates Extra Vecchio from younger, sharper Toscani is what happens after the tobacco has been selected. Its particularly assertive filler undergoes an extended fermentation, followed by substantial maturation, which rounds off some of Kentucky's natural edges without stripping away its strength. Light one and there's no mistaking what you're smoking: smoldering hardwood, dark earth, leather, pepper and savory spice, with the distinctive smoky intensity created by traditional fire curing. The Valtiberina wrapper provides considerable structure, while the Pontecorvo tobacco adds weight and persistence. It is full, dry and deeply tobacco-driven—the antithesis of the creamy sweetness associated with many Caribbean cigars.
The Toscano Extra Vecchio isn't a cigar designed to charm everyone, and that's part of its appeal. Its rustic shape, pronounced strength and lingering fire-cured character speak directly to experienced smokers who appreciate tobacco with a genuine sense of place. Smoke it whole for the complete, gradually intensifying experience or follow Italian tradition and cut it in half for two shorter sessions.
