Rye whiskey usually kicks down the door with pepper and herbs, but Thirteenth Colony decided to teach it some manners. This release takes their signature Georgia Rye—a 96% rye mashbill known for its aggressive spice—and finishes it using Maple Wood Spirals. Unlike a traditional barrel finish where the liquid sits passively in a used cask, these spiral-cut inserts are submerged directly into the whiskey, maximizing surface area and forcing a rapid, intense extraction of the wood's natural sugars.
This is the critical distinction: it is not a "maple-flavored" whiskey loaded with syrup; it is a whiskey finished with maple wood. The spirals impart distinct lactones—chemical compounds responsible for that buttery, woody sweetness—without thickening the liquid or cloying the palate.
Bottled at 95 proof, the spirit retains its structural integrity. The heat of the rye grain fights through the toasted maple influence, creating a push-pull dynamic between savory spice and breakfast-table sweetness. You are tasting a lesson in geometry and wood science, distilled in Americus.
