The GlenDronach Port Wood is a Highland single malt with two stages of maturation. It first rests in the distillery's Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks. Then it moves into port pipes from the Douro Valley in Portugal. Master Blender Dr Rachel Barrie marries the casks together. It is bottled at 46% ABV and is not chill filtered.
The idea comes from history. In the 1800s, port travelled down the Douro River in large pipes. Many of those casks ended up in the cellars of Scottish high society. GlenDronach was founded in 1826, so the link felt natural. The name is said to mean "valley of the brambles" in Scots Gaelic.
In the glass the whisky shows a deep cherry wood color, and it all comes from the oak. On the nose you will find Victoria plum, bramble and strawberry jam. Cherry blossom and honeysuckle float on top. Underneath sit sandalwood and a little ginger.
Your first sip brings layers of blackberry, roasted apple crumble and gingerbread. Give it a moment, and baked orange and black cherry start to build. The finish is richly fruity. Orange peel, sultana and cherry cake stay with you after you swallow.
Sip it neat first, then try a drop or two of water. It goes well with dark chocolate desserts, fruit tarts and aged cheese. A plate of roast meat works too. If you like sherried Scotch and want more red fruit, this bottle is a smart next step.
