A long-standing finish
PortWood has been part of The Balvenie's older range for many years and is one of the best-known port-finished single malts. It reflects Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE's work with cask finishing.
The whisky
Selected 21 year old Balvenie, first matured in traditional oak, is transferred to port casks that previously held fine port wine. The Whisky Exchange describes these as former 30 year old tawny port pipes. The result is creamy and silky, with fruit, honey and spice.
How to enjoy it
Best neat, slowly, after dinner. A drop of water opens up the nutty side. It pairs well with blue cheese or a plate of dark chocolate and dried fruit.
