Tamnavulin
Tamnavulin opened in 1966 in the hamlet of Tomnavoulin, on the banks of the River Livet near Ballindalloch. The name is said to mean "the mill on the hill" in Gaelic. Owned by Whyte & Mackay, the distillery reopened in 2007 after a twelve-year silence.
The whisky
The spirit starts in American ex-bourbon casks for a smooth, sweet base, then moves into selected seasoned sherry casks from respected cooperages in southern Spain. Tamnavulin uses three different types of sherry cask for the finish, adding richness to the brand's light, fruity house style. The colour is amber gold.
How to enjoy it
Try it neat first, then with a splash of water or over a large ice cube. The raisin and orange notes sit well with dark chocolate, dried fruit or a mature Cheddar.
