Strongbow Apple Ciders is arguably the most famous cider brand in the world, serving as the global benchmark for the English Dry Cider style. Originating in Hereford, England, in 1960, it was named after the Cambro-Norman knight Richard de Clare, nicknamed "Strongbow." While many modern North American ciders have leaned into extreme sweetness or "cloudy" textures, Strongbow has built its legacy on consistency, high carbonation, and a distinct, tannin-driven dryness. It is designed to be the ultimate thirst-quencher refreshing, sharp, and unmistakably "apple."
Cider Description
Strongbow pours a brilliant, crystal-clear pale gold with a vigorous, champagne-like effervescence and a thin white head that dissipates rapidly.
Aroma: The nose is clean, sharp, and focused. It leads with dominant notes of tart green apples and bruised apple skin, followed by a subtle, earthy undertone of English orchard floor. There are no heavy floral or candy-like scents; it smells purely of fermented juice and natural acidity.
Palate: On the tongue, it is light-bodied with a crisp, "prickly" carbonation that cuts across the palate. It leads with a flash of natural apple sweetness, which is almost immediately balanced by a signature bittersweet tannic dryness. The finish is remarkably short and clean, leaving a faint, puckering tartness that encourages another sip.
Profile: It typically sits at 5.0% ABV (though this can vary slightly by region) and, as a cider, has 0 IBU. It is naturally gluten-free.
Technical Notes: The unique flavor profile of Strongbow comes from a specific blend of bittersweet cider apples grown in England and France. These apples are much higher in tannins and acid than the "dessert" apples (like Gala or Fuji) used in sweeter ciders. The juice is fermented with a highly attenuative yeast strain to ensure most of the sugars are converted to alcohol, resulting in its famous dry finish.
