Sonoma-Cutrer is a Chardonnay specialist based in the heart of the Russian River Valley. This bottle is the winery's Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, made from 100% Chardonnay. Cool fog off the Pacific lets the grapes ripen slowly. That gives the wine both rich fruit and fresh acidity.
The team leans on Burgundian methods. The grapes are picked by hand at night to keep them cool. The wine is fermented and aged in French oak barrels. The aim is a wine that feels creamy and full, but never heavy or overly buttery. The 2023 vintage is 13.9% ABV.
In the glass it shows a medium straw color. You will smell stone fruit and apple blossom first, then honeydew, pineapple and a light touch of oak spice. The palate brings ripe pear and golden delicious apple. Bright acidity balances a soft middle, and the finish ends with gentle barrel spice.
James Suckling gave the 2023 vintage 91 points, praising its bright acidity and medium body.
Chill it to about 50 to 55°F before you pour. It is lovely with crab, grilled salmon with lemon butter, roast chicken or a creamy pasta. A mushroom risotto works well too. Keep a bottle handy for an easy weeknight dinner or a gathering with friends.
