Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is the wine that started Silver Oak back in 1972. Ray Duncan and Justin Meyer founded the winery with a clear goal. They wanted a Cabernet that tastes great when young and still ages with grace. This bottling carries that idea forward today.
The grapes come from Alexander Valley in northern Sonoma County, not from Napa. Silver Oak makes a Napa Valley Cabernet too, and the two show different sides of the house style. This one is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2020, for example, the blend was about 95% Cabernet. Small parts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec filled out the rest.
Silver Oak is famous for aging its reds in American oak, and it even runs its own cooperage. The 2022 release spent two years in barrel. That oak brings sweet spice and a polished frame while the fruit stays in front.
Notes shift a little from year to year, so here is the 2020 vintage as the winery describes it. The wine pours a clear ruby. On the nose you find cedar and concentrated red fruit. Raspberry, cherry and a hint of cola fill the palate, framed by polished tannins. Fresh acidity carries a long finish. Silver Oak says you can drink it now or cellar it through 2042. We stock more than one vintage, so check the year you choose.
At the table, this Cabernet Sauvignon loves a rack of lamb. It is just as happy beside a grilled ribeye, roast beef, mushroom dishes or a wedge of aged cheddar. Give it some air in a decanter, and serve it slightly below room temperature. Large glasses help the cedar and red fruit open up. If you are cellaring a bottle, store it on its side somewhere cool, dark and steady.
