Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash is a limited yearly release from Michter's in Louisville, Kentucky. It honors John Shenk, a Swiss Mennonite farmer who started a distillery in Pennsylvania in 1753. That distillery later became Bomberger's and then Michter's. The modern series began in 2018, and each year's recipe is a little different.
This is not a bourbon. It is a Kentucky sour mash American whiskey with too little corn to be bourbon. The 2024 mash bill uses a good share of rye, plus malted rye and caramel malt for a creamy feel. Some of it rested in barrels made from Vosges oak in France. That wood was air-dried for 24 months and then toasted to Michter's specs. It is a small batch whiskey bottled at 45.6% ABV, or 91.2 proof.
Michter's describes a dark amber color. On the nose you get crème brûlée and spice. The palate is herbal, with bright spice, fruit and soft nougat. The finish is smooth and creamy. Tasters also mention caramel, toffee and gentle oak.
Take it neat first, then try a drop of water. It also works in a rich, spicy Old Fashioned or another classic cocktail. Try it with grilled meats, aged cheeses or a square of dark chocolate.
Bottles are scarce, so it is a treat for the whiskey fan who loves chasing limited releases. Bourbon Veach named it Whiskey of the Month in October 2024 after a blind tasting.
