Hornitos Plata is a clean, lively silver tequila that showcases the pure flavor of blue agave without the influence of wood. It’s fresh, approachable, and versatile—well suited for cocktails, margaritas, or casual sipping (though it’s sharper when neat). It leans more toward “mix-and-drink” than high-end sipping, but it brings solid character and value for its category.
Origins & Craftsmanship
-
The Hornitos brand is produced by the Sauza Tequila Import Company, part of the Sauza family of tequilas.
-

-
ABV / Proof: 40% (80 proof), 375 ml
Tasting Profile
| Element | Notes |
|---|---|
| Appearance | Crystal clear with silver / bright highlights, as expected for a blanco / plata tequila. |
| Nose / Aroma | Floral and herbal character, with light citrus and fresh agave. Some herbal notes such as mint or green herbs may show. |
| Palate / Taste | Agave-forward, with citrus brightness (lemon, lime), herbal undertones, and soft cooked agave. Some peppery spice may appear as the mid-palate opens. |
| Finish | Warm, moderately dry, with lingering herbal, citrus, and agave echoes. The finish is not overly long, but retains clarity. |
One reviewer observed:
“You’re hit with a clean, slightly floral and herbal aroma right from the first sip… sharp in neat but good in cocktails.”
Another seller listing describes more nuance:
“Its floral, herbal notes are perfectly complemented by hints of clove, almond and fresh wood, coupled with a zesty finish.”
Uses & Pairings
-
Cocktails / Serving
• Margaritas (classic, flavored) — Hornitos Plata is ideal for mixing.
• Highball or tequila & soda / tonic with lime — let the agave and herbal notes shine.
• Shots (with respect to your preferences) — though many bartenders and reviewers suggest it may feel sharp neat, so alkaline chaser or a twist can help. -
Food Pairings
• Fresh seafood / ceviche — citrus, herbal & agave notes harmonize with brine and freshness.
• Salads with citrus dressings or herbal vinaigrette.
• Mild cheeses, especially fresh goat cheese.
• Fruit desserts or citrus tarts.
• Spicy foods — the peppery edge allows it to hold its own.
