This structured and 'crystalline' white wine originates from the United States, within the prestigious Sta. Rita Hills A.V.A. of Santa Barbara County, California. As a foundational pioneer of cool-climate viticulture, Sanford Winery holds a legendary legacy tracing back to 1971, when Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict identified this unique geographic maritime corridor. Operating under a precision-focused winemaking philosophy, the estate crafts its estate-grown Chardonnay from two iconic heritage properties: the legendary Sanford & Benedict Vineyard and the adjacent Rinconada Vineyard. Rooted in complex soils of maritime alluvial silt, gravel, and calcium-rich shale, these blocks sit directly in the path of a rare, east-west mountain orientation. This opening channels cold Pacific fog and brisk ocean winds directly across the vines, naturally preserving a stunning, chiseled natural acidity while allowing the fruit to build profound structural concentration.
Wine Description
The Sanford Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay presents a brilliant, light straw-gold appearance in the glass with youthful silvery glints. Its sensory profile is exceptionally elegant, deep, and high-toned, striking a masterful balance between California generosity and old-world mineral focus. The bouquet opens with an expressive display of crisp green apples, Meyer lemon curd, and white peach, beautifully layered with complex autolytic notes of roasted hazelnuts, freshly baked brioche, light vanilla bean, and a striking line of crushed-shell salinity. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied, tense, and texturally complex, showcasing a concentrated core of golden orchard fruits and bright citrus oils. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that effortlessly slices through the mid-palate density. The mouthfeel is sleek yet pleasingly creamy, driven by a fine, chalky mineral tension that carries into a remarkably long, savory finish accented by a touch of baking spice and lingering marine salinity.
