Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut Candela
Binder: African Cameroon
Filler: Nicaraguan
Profile: Medium
The CroMagnon Fomorian is a striking and rare candela-wrapped cigar that has earned cult status among collectors and enthusiasts alike. First appearing in 2013 as an event-only release, the Fomorian returned in 2014 for the D.C. Cigar Tweet-Up in a limited run of just 100 boxes of 24 cigars (2,400 total). Built on the foundation of the popular CroMagnon EMH, the blend substitutes the traditional Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper for a vibrant Ecuadorian Connecticut Candela, creating an unforgettable twist on the CroMagnon profile.
Rolled at Fabrica de Tabacos NicaSueño S.A. in Estelí, Nicaragua, the Fomorian measures 5 x 56 (Robusto Gordo) and combines the candela wrapper with a robust core of Nicaraguan filler tobaccos and an African Cameroon binder. The result is a medium-bodied smoke that balances candela's signature grassy, hay-like flavors with the CroMagnon's earth, pepper, chocolate, and cedar notes. A honeyed sweetness emerges on the retrohale, rounded out by subtle floral nuances, dark chocolate, and a touch of espresso.
The Fomorian quickly became one of the most sought-after candela cigars on the market. Construction is solid, with a smooth draw and thick smoke output, though the delicate wrapper requires care when handling.
The Fomorian is not just a cigar, it's a conversation piece. Its green candela wrapper nods to Irish myth, with the name referencing the Fomorians, hostile beings from ancient Celtic lore. For those seeking a unique smoking experience that pushes candela beyond its grassy stereotypes, the CroMagnon Fomorian offers a bold, balanced, and memorable journey.
Skip Martin and Michael Spatafora of RoMa Craft produce in deliberately small quantities, prioritizing quality over volume at every stage. Candela wrappers — also known as American Market Selection or jade wrappers — are produced by halting the fermentation process early, preserving the green chlorophyll in the leaf and creating that distinctive color and the characteristic grassy, fresh hay aroma. Most candela cigars stop at that surface-level profile, but the Fomorian's African Cameroon binder and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos push the experience into genuine complexity, revealing dark chocolate, espresso, and cedar beneath the candela's aromatic surface. This is a cigar for the adventurous aficionado who wants to experience what candela tobacco can contribute when it is paired with serious interior tobaccos rather than used purely for novelty. Originally produced in extremely limited event-only quantities — availability today remains constrained and variable.
