Our Connecticut Shade Robusto is the perfect cigar for any time of day. Its smooth and balanced profile makes it an ideal companion to a fresh cup of coffee — one of the many reasons we chose to call it Roll Call. If you’ve ever sat through roll call at the firehouse, you know there’s no shortage of coffee cups in hand. That’s why we incorporated a coffee cup into the band design — a nod to those early moments of camaraderie and connection.
This cigar also pairs wonderfully with a lower-proof bourbon, allowing the subtle flavors of the cigar to shine without being overpowered. The name Roll Call also reflects what cigars are all about — gathering with friends and family, sharing stories, updates, and enjoying meaningful moments together. Much like the start of a shift, lighting up this cigar sets the tone for good conversation and connection. We hope you enjoy Roll Call as much as we do.
Roll Call in the Fire Service: In the fire service, “roll call” refers to the formal process of accounting for personnel at the start of a shift or during emergency operations. Its roots trace back to early military traditions, where accountability and readiness were critical to mission success. As organized fire departments emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in cities like London and New York, the need for structured routines—including shift changes, equipment checks, and crew accountability—became essential.
Roll call typically occurs at the beginning of a firefighter’s shift. It ensures that all assigned personnel are present, properly equipped, and briefed on duties, station conditions, apparatus status, and any special instructions. It also reinforces discipline, preparedness, and team cohesion. Today, while some departments use digital accountability systems, the tradition of roll call remains a foundational practice that underscores the fire service’s core values: readiness, responsibility, and brotherhood.
