The Rocky Patel The Edge 20th Anniversary Toro Sampler celebrates a cigar that helped change the trajectory of the Rocky Patel brand. When The Edge was conceived, the idea was deliberately unconventional: a serious, full-flavored cigar offered without elaborate presentation, originally packed unbanded in massive 100-count crates. Plenty of people questioned the concept. Smokers answered differently, turning The Edge into one of Rocky Patel's most successful and enduring cigar families. The 20th Anniversary edition looks back at those beginnings while giving the blend a decidedly more refined treatment.
Each sampler contains five 6" x 52 Edge 20th Anniversary Toros, handcrafted in Honduras and dressed in a beautifully aged Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. The choice of Sumatra is significant—it reaches back to the wrapper used on the earliest Edge cigars. Beneath it is a hearty blend of Honduran and Central American tobaccos selected to preserve the muscular personality that made The Edge famous. The profile is medium-to-full, opening around earth, cedar and pepper before developing richer impressions of cocoa, roasted nuts, leather and natural sweetness. Most notably, the Sumatra wrapper used for the anniversary blend was aged for ten years, bringing considerably more maturity and refinement to a cigar whose roots were always about bold tobacco.
This isn't really a sampler in the traditional sense; there aren't five different cigars to compare. Instead, it's a five-cigar presentation of the same 20th Anniversary Toro, making it a particularly good introduction to the commemorative blend or an easy gift for an established Edge smoker. The 6 x 52 format is also an excellent choice for the package, giving the aged Sumatra wrapper enough presence while allowing the richer interior tobaccos room to develop. Two decades after Rocky Patel took a chance on an unconventional cigar called The Edge, this anniversary Toro demonstrates just how far that original idea has traveled.
