From the United States, this wine hails from Sonoma Valley in California, specifically the Pagani Ranch in the Sonoma Valley AVA. Ridge Vineyards is a historic California winery founded in the 1960s and renowned for its dedication to terroir-driven winemaking. With a focus on sustainable farming and minimal intervention, Ridge has built a legacy around single-vineyard expressions—Pagani Ranch being one of its most iconic Zinfandel sources, planted in the late 19th century.
This 2022 Zinfandel showcases a deep ruby hue with vibrant clarity. On the nose, it opens with an expressive bouquet of black raspberry, cherry compote, and sweet spice, followed by hints of wild herbs and crushed violets. The palate is rich yet balanced, featuring ripe blackberry, licorice, and a touch of peppery warmth. It is medium to full-bodied, with structured tannins and refreshing acidity carrying through to a long, polished finish.
Accolades
Decanter (94 pts): Emphasizes the wine’s "grace" and complex spice profile (spiced blood orange and liquorice). It notes that because this is a cooler site, it is always Ridge's last harvest, resulting in a more refined, "classical" California style.
Wine Advocate (94 pts): Focuses on the unique aromatic layers, mentioning surprising notes of yellow peach and floral perfume alongside a long, expressive finish and silky tannins.
Wine Enthusiast (94 pts): Calls out the wine’s opulence and concentration, specifically praising the "raspberry-lime acidity" that prevents the rich tannins and barrel spices from feeling heavy.
Food Pairing
Pair this wine with grilled lamb chops with rosemary, slow-cooked beef stew, or roasted eggplant with Mediterranean herbs. Its bold fruit and vibrant acidity make it a superb partner for savoury, spice-laden dishes. Together, they create an unforgettable dining experience.
