The Mat Under Every Good Tamp
A tamping mat is one of those accessories that seems trivial until you've scratched a bench, chipped a portafilter rim, or watched someone tamp directly on a bare surface and wince. The Rhino Coffee Gear Classic Bench Tamper Mat is the straightforward solution: a flat, extra-thick food-grade silicone mat that sits between your portafilter and the bench, absorbing the downward pressure of tamping and protecting both surfaces from contact damage. At 200mm x 150mm (approximately 8" x 6"), it's compact enough to fit into even small espresso station setups without taking up meaningful counter space — and thick enough that the protection is genuine rather than token.
Food Grade Silicone, Extra Thick
The mat is made from durable food-grade silicone rubber — heat-resistant, easy to wipe clean, and safe for contact with coffee equipment in any setting. The extra thickness is the detail that earns the "Very T H I C C C" from one satisfied reviewer: it gives the mat a satisfying, stable feel under the portafilter during tamping, doesn't compress flat under repeated downward pressure, and provides more cushioning for the bench surface than thinner silicone alternatives. It wipes clean quickly after each session — an important practical consideration for a surface that sits directly below the portafilter basket during puck preparation.
Classic vs. Corner — Which to Choose
The Classic Bench Tamper Mat is a flat rectangular mat designed to sit on an open bench surface — ideal for setups where the espresso station is positioned away from corners or where a flat working surface is preferred. If your tamping station is positioned in a corner and you want a mat that wraps the bench edge and drops vertically, the Rhino Classic Corner Tamper Mat (also available at Coffee Addicts) is the appropriate alternative. Both are food-grade silicone and serve the same protective function — the choice is purely about bench position and workflow preference.
