Radeberger Pilsner is the benchmark for classic Royal Saxon brewing and one of Germany’s most revered traditional beers. Brewed continuously since 1872 in Radeberg, near Dresden, it holds the distinction of being the first beer in Germany to be brewed exclusively as a "Pilsner" style. Historically favored by German nobility earning the official title of "Kanzler-Bräu" under Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and royal appointment by King Frederick Augustus III of Saxony it stands today as a iconic representative of the German Pilsner (Northern/Eastern Style): uncompromisingly crisp, straw-gold, and assertively bitter.
Beer Description
Radeberger Pilsner pours a brilliant, crystal-clear pale straw-gold topped with a dense, snow-white foam head that leaves intricate rings of lacing on the glass.
Aroma: The nose is clean, sharp, and traditional. It leads with dominant notes of spicy German noble hops, fresh-cut grass, and cracked pepper, resting over a delicate base of sweet pilsner malt and fresh cracker dough.
Palate: On the tongue, it is light-to-medium bodied with a crisp, high-effervescent mouthfeel. It opens with a brief wave of bready malt sweetness, which is quickly sliced open by a prominent, dry, and assertive herbal hop bitterness. The mid-palate reveals hints of lemon peel and tea-like hop resins, concluding with a long, bone-dry, and lingering bitter finish.
Profile: It sits at a traditional 4.8% ABV and a firm, structured bitterness of 33 IBU, making it noticeably punchier and more bitter than mass-market light lagers.
Technical Notes: Radeberger’s sharp clarity and distinctive bitterness stem from its strict adherence to the Reinheitsgebot combined with regional water chemistry. It is brewed using 100% German pilsner malt and soft, local artesian water. The bittering and aroma profile is driven by select Hallertau noble hops. A cold, patient bottom-fermentation and long lagering phase clean up all fruity esters, resulting in an ultra-attenuated, dry lager where hop resins take center stage.
