The Penfolds Grandfather Port is a renowned fortified wine from Australia, sourced from specially selected South Australian vineyards. The name 'Grandfather' dates back to 1915, when an oak cask containing a blend of the company's finest tawnies was set aside for the exclusive use of the Penfold family. Wine Description
This fortified wine is a deep tawny colour with a distinctive yellow-green edge, characteristic of extended wood maturation. It is a rare tawny style, made from a blend of up to 13 different varieties. The backbone of the blend is primarily Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro (Mourvèdre), and Cabernet.
The aroma is extremely complex and fragrant. On the nose, it displays intense raisin fruits, fruitcake, liquorice, and roasted walnuts, seamlessly integrated with nutty and vanillin aged characters. The palate is luscious, rich, and full-flavoured, presenting classical Penfolds fruitcake and vanillin oak flavours. It has a sweet, full, and round mid-palate, and a finish that persists on and on, delivering impressive length, freshness, and complexity.
As a non-vintage (NV) tawny, the average blended age is a minimum of 20 years. It is fully matured and bottled for immediate enjoyment; it is best consumed within 12 months of purchase. The typical Alcohol by Volume (ABV) is around 20.0%.
