This approachable Four Grain straight bourbon whiskey originates from the United States, produced by Penelope Bourbon in Bardstown, Kentucky (and originally distilled in partnership with MGP in Lawrenceburg, Indiana). Part of Penelope's foundational Four Grain series, this expression is crafted using a unique blend of three distinct mash bills—combining corn, wheat, rye, and malted barley—with a signature high-wheat emphasis that softens the spirit's overall structure. Aged for a minimum of 4 to 5 years in new charred American oak barrels, it is bottled at an easy-drinking 95 proof (47.5% ABV). It represents a sweet, round, and versatile entry point into modern wheated bourbon profiles.
Spirit Description
This straight bourbon displays a warm gold to light amber hue in the glass. The nose is soft, sweet, and inviting, opening with initial scents of marshmallow, vanilla bean, and sweet cornmeal, underpinned by candied apple, honey graham cracker, and a light touch of toasted oak. On the palate, it is smooth, round, and approachable, delivering flavors of butterscotch, poached pears, and light caramel sauce, counterbalanced by a subtle rye prickle, baking spices, and soft oak char. The finish is clean, medium-length, and delicate, trailing off with lingering notes of sweet wheat grain, vanilla, cinnamon, and a gentle, warming spice. The wheat-forward grain recipe keeps the mouthfeel soft and cream-like, taming any harsh ethanol sting at 47.5% ABV.
Accolades
Penelope Four Grain Bourbon (95 Proof) has secured strong acclaim across national spirits competitions and review outlets, serving as a pillar for the brand's rapid growth. Securing a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition alongside high 90+ point ratings from SIP Awards and Whisky Advocate, critics frequently laud the bottling for its balance of sweet wheat creaminess and subtle rye spice, praising its versatility as both a neat pour and a high-end cocktail base.
