This wine comes from Italy, specifically the Piedmont region within the Barolo DOCG. The Pecchenino winery is a historic family estate established in the late 18th century, with documentation of winemaking dating back to the early 1900s under the guidance of grandfather Attilio. Since 1987, the winery has been run by brothers Orlando and Attilio Pecchenino, who have expanded the estate to 39 hectares. While they were originally famous for their Dolcetto, they have built a formidable reputation for Barolo since acquiring prestigious plots in Monforte d'Alba in 2004. Their philosophy focuses on manual vineyard work, low yields for maximum concentration, and the use of traditional winemaking techniques like the 'submerged cap' method to faithfully express the unique terroir of their single vineyards.
Wine Description
The 2019 'Le Coste di Monforte' is crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes sourced from a single vineyard at an altitude of 440 metres. It displays a garnet red colour and a rich, deep nose. The aromatic profile is complex, featuring pure cherry, strawberry, violet, and hay, layered with savory notes of tobacco, white pepper, wild mint, and liquorice. Some tasters also note accents of iron, wild thyme, and rosemary.
On the palate, this is a robust and fleshy red with a full-bodied structure. It presents a taut, mineral finish supported by dense but silky, well-balanced tannins. The wine is characterized by its bracing acidity and a 'blood orange' streak on the finish that drives its energy. Stylistically, it offers a harmonious balance between intense fruit and a powerful, mineral-driven backbone. The optimal drinking window is estimated to be from 2027 through 2047, though some suggest it can age well until 2063.
