Ornus dell'Ornellaia is an exclusive late-harvest dessert wine from the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy. The wine is named after 'Fraxinus Ornus', the Latin name for the Manna Ash tree (Orniello in Italian), which also inspired the name of the Ornellaia estate itself. Established in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori and currently owned by the historic Frescobaldi family, the estate focuses on a philosophy of 'time, experience, and meditation' to produce wines that express the unique maritime terroir of the Tuscan coast.
Wine Description
This dessert wine presents a bright, signature golden yellow colour in the glass. The nose is intense and complex, featuring sweet honeyed aromas and quince notes alongside hallmark nuances of dried apricot, citrus, and hints of coconut and butterscotch. On the palate, the wine is velvety and multi-layered, showing a vibrant fruit acidity that provides verticality and freshness to balance its concentrated sweetness. The finish is long and harmonious, often revealing a subtle saline element. Crafted from 100% Petit Manseng, the grapes are hand-harvested in multiple passes to select only perfectly dried fruit.
Food Pairing
The complex sweetness and bright acidity of Ornus dell'Ornellaia make it an ideal partner for delicate and creamy desserts. It pairs beautifully with fruit-based dishes such as pear and lime strudel, almond milk jelly with lychees, or a banana trifle. The wine's honey and dried apricot notes also complement desserts featuring vanilla, sweet spices, or caramel, such as crème brûlée or apricot tarts. For a savoury alternative, it can be served with strong, salty blue cheeses or foie gras, which benefit from the wine's rich texture and long finish.
