Opolo Paso Robles Zinfandel is a bold red from California's Central Coast. Opolo Vineyards was founded in 1999 by Rick Quinn and David Nichols. Their vineyards sit on the cooler west side of Paso Robles. From the start, they set out to make a standout Zinfandel. It is still the grape they are best known for.
Opolo makes more than one Zinfandel. Summit Creek is the popular, easygoing bottling. The Mountain Zinfandel blends fruit from the Willow Creek, Adelaida and Templeton Gap districts. Check the label to see which one you have. Alcohol and flavor shift a little from vintage to vintage.
Either way, expect a ripe, fruit-forward wine. Juicy berries and plum fill the glass. Warm spice and black pepper come in behind the fruit. A touch of toasty oak rounds it out. Bright acidity keeps it lively, so it never feels heavy.
The finish is warm and peppery, and the fruit stays with you. Critics like it too. Wine Review Online gave both the 2021 Mountain and the 2023 Summit Creek 91 points.
Serve it a little below room temperature, around 60 to 65°F. It loves food with smoke and char. Try it with barbecue ribs, grilled steak, burgers or spicy sausage. A hearty stew is a good match on a cold night.
Reach for this bottle when you want a red that is rich, juicy and generous. It is a true taste of Paso Robles.
