London may have given its name to the most popular and traditional style of gin, but the city has long since relinquished its monopoly on it. London Dry standards include requirements for proof, base, natural ingredients, no flavor or color added after distillation, and only a minute amount of sweetener. Beyond that, there’s ample opportunity for a distiller to put its stamp on the spirit. Taste three global takes on the London Dry style and marvel at Irish, Australian, and German takes on the classic framework.
Dingle Original Pot Still Dry Gin took the World’s Best Gin and World’s Best London Dry Gin awards at the 2019 World Gin Awards. With the pedigree, does anything more need to be said? We’ll say it anyway: this smooth, soft sip is like a whisper of the memory of the idea of the quintessential London Dry. In the moments it lives on your tongue you might pick out the unique botanicals that create a sense of Irish terroir: rowan berry, fuschia, bog myrtle, hawthorn and heather.
Nikka Coffey Gin.
Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin captures the essence of contemporary Australia’s heritage in Europe and Asia. Whole Australian oranges, cardamom, cinnamon and star anise add rich fruitcake tones. Tasmanian pepperberry leaf provides warmth rather than heat, and lemon myrtle is a beautiful alternative to lemon peel.
