Nikka Coffey Gin achieves its complexity through the perfect balance of 11 selected botanicals and the distinctive silky texture of Nikka's Coffey still distillates — combining the traditional gin botanical framework of juniper, angelica, coriander, and citrus peels with four uniquely Japanese citrus varieties and a touch of Sansho pepper that makes it one of the most distinctively Japanese gins produced.
The four Japanese citrus varieties — Yuzu, Kabosu, Amanatsu, and Shequasar — are the defining element of Nikka Coffey Gin. Each contributes a different citrus profile: Yuzu's aromatic complexity, Kabosu's tangy tartness, Amanatsu's sweet-bitter grapefruit quality, and Shequasar's bright lime-like sharpness. Together they create a bright, zesty aroma that is distinctly Japanese while remaining within the recognizable gin framework. The touch of apples — a fruit central to Nikka's history, since apple products kept the company solvent while the first whiskies were maturing — adds a gentle sweetness. The Japanese Sansho pepper on the finish provides a pleasantly tangy, lip-tingling heat different from the black pepper of European gins. All of this runs through the Coffey still's distinctive distillation, producing the silky, texturally rich base that distinguishes Nikka's spirits.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Nikka Coffey Gin Japanese?
The four Japanese citrus botanicals — Yuzu, Kabosu, Amanatsu, and Shequasar — replace or augment the standard European citrus used in most gins, giving Coffey Gin a distinctive Japanese citrus profile. The Japanese Sansho pepper on the finish adds a uniquely Asian spice note. The apple botanical is a direct reference to Nikka's own heritage — apples were central to keeping the company viable before their first whiskies were ready.
