New Cuba Original Corojo gets to the heart of what made the New Cuba concept interesting in the first place: flavorful Cuban-seed Nicaraguan tobacco offered as an honest, everyday cigar. The line traces its roots to Casa Fernandez and the tobacco-growing operation that became AGANORSA Leaf, a name experienced cigar smokers know as much for the tobacco it grows as for the cigars carrying its own bands. AGANORSA built its reputation cultivating Cuban-seed varieties in Nicaragua, particularly Corojo and Criollo, and New Cuba provides a remarkably accessible introduction to that tobacco tradition.
The Original Corojo takes a decidedly more traditional approach than the softer Connecticut version. Corojo brings spice, aroma and a naturally assertive tobacco character, complementing the earthy Nicaraguan core underneath. Expect cedar and toasted tobacco to lead into earth, roasted nuts and pepper, with enough natural sweetness to round the edges as the cigar develops. The Cuban-sandwich construction keeps New Cuba firmly in everyday-cigar territory, but that's part of its appeal: you're getting legitimate Nicaraguan tobacco character without paying for the elaborate presentation or all-long-filler construction of considerably more expensive cigars.
For the smoker who appreciates old-school Nicaraguan Corojo, this may be the most straightforward New Cuba of the bunch. It isn't trying to be polished into something it's not. There's some rusticity, some pepper and plenty of tobacco flavor—and that's precisely the point. New Cuba Original Corojo is the cigar to keep within reach when you want something inexpensive enough to light without thinking twice, but flavorful enough that you never feel as though you've settled for a cheap cigar.
