The My Father La Promesa Corona Gorda has dimensions that serious cigar smokers tend to notice. At 5½" x 48, there is less filler mass separating the palate from La Promesa's handsome Ecuadorian Habano Rosado Oscuro wrapper, making this one of the more articulate expressions of the blend. That tobacco surrounds Nicaraguan binder and filler cultivated by the García family, whose remarkable story—from José “Pepín” García leaving Cuba to building farms and the My Father factory in Nicaragua—is precisely what the name La Promesa commemorates.
That 48 ring gauge matters. The Rosado Oscuro wrapper has a stronger voice here, bringing aromatic spice and subtle sweetness into sharper relief against the earth, cedar and pepper of the Nicaraguan interior. Roasted coffee, leather and warm spice emerge as the cigar settles, but the narrower proportions preserve definition between those flavors rather than blending everything into sheer richness. It's an assertive cigar, certainly, but one with the precision and balance that separate mature Nicaraguan tobacco from simple strength.
Among the La Promesa vitolas, the Corona Gorda is an especially compelling choice for the experienced smoker. It isn't the largest or most imposing cigar in the box, nor does it need to be. Its appeal lies in proportion—a traditional 5½ x 48 format that allows excellent wrapper leaf and García-grown Nicaraguan tobacco to speak with equal clarity. Sometimes reducing the ring gauge doesn't give you less cigar; it gives you more of what matters.
For someone trying La Promesa for the first time, the Toro would be difficult to argue against. It provides enough length for the blend to evolve and a 52 ring gauge that keeps wrapper and filler in proper conversation. More importantly, it's a cigar that explains My Father particularly well—Cuban cigar-making tradition interpreted through exceptional Nicaraguan tobacco by a family that quite literally built its future around keeping a promise.
