This Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Merryvale, a winery in St. Helena since 1983. The fruit grows on the estate's Profile vineyard in the St. Helena AVA, at the north end of Napa Valley. The Mayacamas Mountains shield this warm area from coastal fog. That lets the grapes ripen fully. Your bottle is from the 2016 vintage.
Pour a glass and blackberry and cassis greet you right away. The dark fruit feels ripe and concentrated. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, yet fresh acidity keeps it lively. Firm, elegant tannins give it a solid frame. The finish brings more dark fruit, held up by those fine tannins.
Reviewers gave the 2016 strong marks for its depth and balance. It drinks well now. Its structure also means it can keep improving in your cellar. Store it on its side in a cool, dark place.
Open the bottle about 30 minutes before dinner so it can breathe. Serve it at 60–65°F. It shines next to grilled steak, roast lamb or a board of aged cheese. A hearty pasta with meat sauce is a great match too.
You'll love this bottle if classic Napa Cabernet is your style. It also makes a fine gift for a wine lover or a special night in.
