This compact 0.87 oz packet from McCormick yields a smooth, hearty brown gravy that brings classic savory flavor to everyday dinners and holiday spreads while lowering sodium intake compared with the brand's original mix. Made with McCormick spices and no added MSG, the gravy mix dissolves into hot water for a quick sauce you can simmer briefly or prepare ahead and reheat.
How simple is this gravy to prepare for a busy weeknight?
Very straightforward — one packet mixes with one cup of water and needs only about a minute of simmering to thicken. It’s a practical shortcut when you want homemade-style gravy without long prep or complex ingredients.
- Mix 1 packet with 1 cup of water
- Bring to a boil, simmer for 1 minute until thickened
- Makes a single serving; scale up packets for larger batches
- Reheats well for make-ahead meal planning
What dishes pair best with this reduced-sodium brown gravy?
The savory profile complements a wide range of comfort dishes from carved beef to vegetarian sides. Use it to finish plated entrees, drizzle over mashed potatoes, or stir into casseroles and stews for added depth.
- Roast beef, prime rib, and hot beef sandwiches
- Mashed potatoes, stuffing, and roasted vegetables
- As a base for pan sauces, pot roast, casseroles, and beef stew

How does the 30% less sodium version compare to the original mix?
This version keeps McCormick’s signature savory seasoning while reducing sodium by 30% versus the brand’s standard brown gravy mix. It provides a balanced flavor without added MSG, making it a lighter option for those watching salt but not wanting to compromise on taste.
- 30% less sodium than McCormick original brown gravy mix
- No added MSG (naturally occurring glutamates may still be present)
- Same quick-cooking convenience and texture as the original
- Packaged in shelf-stable 0.87 oz plastic packets for easy storage
Can this mix be used in recipes beyond pouring over meat?
Yes — the mix is versatile and can act as a flavor booster or thickener in many recipes. Stir it into pan drippings for an impromptu sauce, add to soups for richer body, or incorporate into casseroles to increase savory depth.
- Blend into pan sauces and gravies for deglazed pans
- Use as a thickening and flavoring agent in stews and soups
- Mix into casseroles for consistent savory notes throughout
- Adjust water amounts for thinner sauces or more concentrated flavor
